EFFECTIVE AUGUST 22, 2026

Privacy policy.

Witnesses should know what stays private, what may become public, and how to control their information.

Information we collect

When you submit evidence, we collect the photo or video, title, description, location, capture date when supplied, witness name or alias, contact email, publishing preference, and rights confirmations. Follow-up evidence and private status messages remain connected to the original reference ID. Public comments collect the name or alias and text you provide and are held for review before publication. Features such as evidence observations, voting, following cases, and owner controls may use ChatGPT sign-in to attribute actions, prevent duplicate votes, maintain watchlists, and moderate participation. Contact forms collect the information you enter.

What becomes public

Evidence submissions remain private while pending review. If approved, the media, case description, general location, category, and chosen public witness name may appear in the archive. Contact emails are not published. Selecting anonymous publication replaces the public name with “Anonymous witness,” while the private contact record remains available to the site owner.

How information is used

We use information to review and publish submissions, ask witnesses for context, maintain private submission-status records, save followed cases, count one community verdict per signed-in person, moderate comments and timestamped observations, respond to requests, investigate abuse, protect the service, correct the record, and understand site performance. We do not sell personal information.

Analytics and privacy choices

Google Analytics loads only after you choose to allow analytics on this device. If allowed, Google may receive device, browser, approximate location, referral, and usage information under its own terms. You can change this choice using the Privacy choices control. Essential local storage remembers that preference and supports core site behavior.

Embedded media and outside services

The archive includes media delivered by official government platforms, YouTube’s privacy-enhanced player, and Wikimedia Commons. Loading an embed may disclose technical information such as your IP address and browser details to that provider. Their privacy practices are governed by their own policies.

Advertising

If advertising is enabled, this policy will be updated to identify the advertising providers and available controls. Where required, advertising cookies and personalized ads will not be activated until the appropriate consent process has been completed.

Retention and security

Records are retained as reasonably necessary for publication, moderation, security, legal claims, source verification, and correction history. Rejected or removed material may be retained for a limited period to prevent abuse or resolve disputes. No online system can guarantee absolute security.

Your choices

You may request access, correction, anonymization, or deletion of personal information that can reasonably be verified as yours. You may also withdraw a submission before publication or request review after publication. Legal rights vary by location.

Use the contact form and choose Privacy request. Include the relevant reference ID when available.

Children

This service is not directed to children under 13. A parent or legal guardian should submit evidence on behalf of a child and avoid disclosing unnecessary identifying information.

Policy updates

Material changes will be reflected on this page with a revised effective date. Continued use after an update means the revised policy applies to later activity.
